Milestones & Origins of Guilbert UK & Ireland

Guilbert were a French company who came to the UK to challenge the commercial office supplies market here.

1908......WH Hayden & Co Ltd formed

1934 ......Ofrex founded

1937 ..... H.J.Chapman Ltd formed (Founded in 1937 by Horace Chapman. He left the business in  1972 when it was acquired by Inveresk Paper Co. It was further sold on to Georgia Pacific in 1984 - details thanks to David Hopkinson former employee)

1959 ..... Guilbert formed in France

1960......Sandhurst Marketing (Office Supplies) Ltd formed

1964......Cartwright-Brice Ltd formed

1972 ..... Pentagon Stationers formed (By two ex-employees of Sandhurst Stationers - Brian Standing & Michael Evetts)

1973......Arkle Office Supplies formed

1974.......Esse Business Supplies formed

1989 ..... WHSmith buy Pentagon who in turn purchase, Satex, Haydens, Cartwright-Brice, H.J.Chapman and Sandhurst to form WHSmith business supplies.

1992 ..... 'Niceday' brand is launched by WHSmith and the same year Guilbert SA of France buy Ofrex Limited

1994 ..... Andover offices & DC opened

1996......Niceday Ltd formed

1996 ..... Guilbert SA of France buy 'Niceday' Limited

1998 ..... PPR of France buy Guilbert (Belfast, Dublin and Northampton sites open)

1999 ..... Niceday & Ofrex merge to form Guilbert UK

2000 ..... Guilbert buy 'Boise Cascade Office Products' including mail order company 'Neat Ideas'

2002 ..... PPR sell off 'Neat Ideas' and it's European partners to Staples (USA)

2003 ..... PPR sell Guilbert to USA company Office Depot
